Raising the flag

To Ponder About

In conjunction with the 49th Malaysia Independence Day, aka Merdeka Day for Malaysia, which falls on 31st August, all Malaysian should raise the flag, our National Flag, Jalur Gemilang in the name of patriotism.

For once, I was wondering what is the hype for raising the flag anyway? A simple googling found me the latest entry on the issue. You can find the links below. Last time, we Malaysian used to enjoy raising the flag. Decorating the entire of their cars for example with full of mini Jalur Gemilang. And some even go the distance like making the largest cake in the shape of Jalur Gemilang as well.

How well do we, Malaysian understand the flag. Our own Jalur Gemilang. Fairly, most of us find it that to decorate the building, office premises or even homes with Jalur Gemilang as part of the needs. Not the real show of appreciation and loving for the country from the bottom of the heart. Go read the history and some fact about our Jalur Gemilang here.

I recalled that when the media urge us all to raise the mini Jalur Gemilang on their car, my friends and I joked that whenever the law enforcers saw the mini flag on the car roof, they’ll just “tutup mata sebelah” even if we are speeding or breaking the traffic laws. It’s mean, I know to joke about the Jalur Gemilang.

As the matter of fact, I was once a prefect in my primary school whom designated to raise the Jalur Gemilang on the Monday morning assembly for 3 straight years. Every day I had raise the flag in the morning and take it down before school ends. It was a demanding job and sometimes, the flag has to be raised half accordingly to the nation’s affair like the death of certain royalty or etc.

When I was raising the Flag, I always firm believer that the flag should never touch the land. Why? it’s symbolise that the country and the Flag should always standing tall. Raised. We should never step on it or even discard them anywhere just like the post-Merdeka Day celebration. It ached my heart to see the flag, even the mini Flag being treated like junk along the roadside. It shows that we still in the 3rd world mentality. Yes. That’s why I never mess with the Jalur Gemilang for once.

Some blardy idiot raised the flag for all year long and left it to the cruelty of the harsh weather. Finally, the flag were worn out over time. Is that the way to treat your national flag? Probably that’s why you will never see me messing around with mini flag.
