Quarter Life Crisis

I never came across this term until recently, when I stopped by the Borders to browse for any good books. I came across a book that tell you about the guide in every year. Partly I was surprise with the content of the book, which I totally forgot the title nor the author.

As I read the age of 24 what they should do, the author recommending those in the age of 24 to to complete the 365 items listed in a year because that was the only time in life for them to do before venturing into working life.

Now that I am in the year of 25 going 26 this year, I happened to fall in the area of transition from Quarter Life Crisis to the working age. At the age of 26, I should be claiming more responsibilities and workload. Hence, the book recommending me to write a letter similar like below:-

I, hereby writing this letter to my current employer that I shall be committed, dedicated and selling myself, my soul and life for the next 40 years attaching to this company for the best, with minimum wages.

I will work my ass off, for every weekdays from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. I will also work beyond the long hours after working hours, on weekend and even public holiday for the benefit of the company. I shall not complaint, shall not condemn and shall not criticize the company for she is the one giving me the bread and butter.

your slave
……….

Basically, I shall be required to write this letter to my employer at the 3rd quarter of this year. Meantime, I am living my life as going through the QLC (Quarter Life Crisis).

Some information on the wikipedia reveals that the terminology has become common nowadays. There’s also the book reviews.

The content of the book asked me to compare myself with 4 main people.

1. Bill Gates.
By the age of 25, he has founded Microsoft and making millions of dollars. Changing the world too….

2. Mozart
By the age of 25, he has performed all over Europe.

3. Alexander The Great
By the age of 25, he has conquered most part of the world.

4. Joan De Arc
By the age of 25, she has saved the France from England.

So, if you were neither there… there goes it. It is said that whoever you can be by the age of 25, you are the person throughout your life already.

How do you deal with your quarter life crisis?

If Work Is A Game of Dota, These Are The Rules

Under the Sun View Comments

Working. Work. Job. These 3 words are not the beauty to the ears. Most of my friends hated their jobs. Especially when it comes to yearly bonuses, these people are looking forward to but more than 1.5 of bonuses.

A friend of mine once said, “If it is a month of bonus, time to tender the resignation. If it is a two-month bonus, I’ll shake the boss hand and say thank you. If it is a three-month bonus, I would eventually call him Daddy for once.” Wait till I applied it to my work. I’ll bring it up to my bosses if they asked if I am happy with what I am getting.

Considering him lucky that his boss decided to give him at least 1 month bonus, in which reflecting to what he is making per month based on last year bonus payment. I was confused that I asked him, what do his boss meant by that. He said, “Let say I was getting RM1000 a month. Last year my bonus was 1.5 of the monthly salary. Hence it means I should be drawing RM1500 bonus. This year, my salary has been adjusted to RM1100. The boss asked what my bonus was last year, in which I told him as above. He told me that this year I will be getting the same as last year but of 1.0 of the salary.”

I looked into his face, which he later added “I’m getting RM1000 this year despite that the fact that the company is doing a good revenue.” How I wish I could tell him that he should consider himself lucky that he is not only drawing basic and commission but also the year-end bonus. I, myself doesn’t have the luxury of getting bonuses just because this company I am attached to does not practice it for the sales team. ?

Coming back to the above topic, here is why I find that work is a game of Dota.
In the game, we begin with Level 1. Having armed with nothing greater items, we need to gain experience and farm some gold in order to get better items. We might face with experience players and lost the lane control. There’s nothing much we can do but to preserve, trying very hard not to get killed along. Then it comes to the part where you getting cornered and gangbanging. A little reminder from the team mates is like getting some advice from the colleague. They are able to sense the change of the situation and informed us to be wary of getting killed in a trap.

We need to have the teamwork to survive at later stage. There is no “I” in a team. Like my boss love to say, “Hero dies first.” Therefore, team spirit is important which I would say it reflect to the same at work. We need to stick together in the work area among ourselves. In Dota that there will always be 3 different types of hero attributes; Strength, Agility and Intelligence. Same goes to work, that there will always be the roles to carry out. For example that there is Sales team, Operation team, Production team, Management Team, Finance and Admin Team and more. Each of this team is like different type of heroes characters; Supporter, Tanker, Killer, Healer, Carrier. Just name it.

When it comes to items, it just like the tools we had in work. A sales man can never go without a proper shoe, cell phones and name card. Just like arming a Tidehunter with Battlefury. Imagine getting Tide for a Agahim Specter. It’s just seems absurd. Like giving a programmer to run a multi-million dollar programming on a 386 system?

I’m just getting started with this topic. There are few more micro-Dota to explore that will tell you just apply the same rules at work from Dota, then that’s the whole law of the universe. It never changed.
