Second Life

Information Technology, To Ponder About No Comments

When we playing online games, it seems like we are living in the virtual world. The last time I played Utopia, I was like remembering when is the utopian days as in our hours. So, when this Ansch Chung (Ailin Graef) decided to start a virtual world, and making thousands from it, I begin to feel curious.

According to Chung, in June 2004 she began selling and creating custom animations and then used this money to buy and develop virtual land. This is also considered the beginning of her business where, for the first time, she kept and reinvested funds instead of giving them away. Chung currently owns hundreds of servers worth of land, most of which are sold or rented to other users as a part of her ‘Dreamland’ areas. Within Dreamland various levels of zoning rules are enforced; most other land in Second Life is unzoned, where multiple different types of business or housing are located in adjacent areas. Philip Rosedale, the CEO of Linden Lab - the company that produces Second Life - has referred to Anshe as “the government” when referring to the role she plays managing her regions.

Last I heard is that Sweden decided to start an embassy in the Second Life. Meaning, there will be a parallel world known as Second Life in the Internet? Wow… things are getting surreal. But does it means that I can own a house in virtual Second Life but homeless in real life? I just couldn’t understand of being the first virtual millionaire?

Apple iPhone vs. Microsoft OQO Model O2

Information Technology 1 Comment

When Jobs launched the iPhone, a lot of hypes and hoo ha coming from all sort of sources. The technology, the joint venture with Cingular and so on. Then comes to Cisco who also have used the iPhone name in their LinkSys line. Throughout the period, Apple Inc stock market rises and causing the other mobile manufacturers stock price drop slightly.

Then came the Microsoft’s Gates with the new Vista Capable OQO’s Model 02. Ironically, in their website, the background of the model itself shows the Firefox browser. Isn’t suppose Vista supporting their IE or they(Vista) just wanted to make FF compatible?

This leads to me that the entire world is moving towards the era of mobility. I believe what these people saw is the 10 years down the road future. Just like yesterday I had a conversation with Daniel, he asked when was the last time you went out of home without a mobile? How many times in a year you go out without a mobile phone with you? I’m sure mobile phone has become a part of our lives. Kelvin said that it has become his third testicles. Stick to him all the time.

With the mobile phones or smart phones in the market, it is not sufficient enough to meet the demand of new breed of generations. For me, I wanted to have a mobile phone with all the computer have just the triple play ready (supporting voice, data and video). Instead of carrying the multiple gadgets around us, like the character in the movie “Night at the Museum” Don played by Paul Rudd. He had all the gadgets around his waist. Just like the Broker Batman.

When last time whoever the first manage to penetrate the end user market, known as Home Computer or Personal Computer, they were making the money. Being the pioneer and leading the way. Now, whoever who manage to monopoly the market by being the first single system whereby capable of integrate the entire system one is using. For instance the contacts, schedules, Instant Messaging (such as Skype, MSN Live, Yahoo! Messenger and AOL), telco providers on voice (eg. via GSM, EDGE, 3G, HSDA and so on), connectivity various capable like Firewire, USB, bluetooth, Infrared, WiFi, WiMax and so on.

The best is like when I have a intelligent cum brilliant phone, I wanted it to be the secondary computer. It has the features what a notebook+computer+pda should have. Just similar except smaller. Whenever I am with my primary choice of hardware, it shall take over and sync among each other. If I am not reachable at my office number, there will be a routing feature to not only route the call but also various data. And these people can reach to you via a single contact point.
I can start to imagine that the iPhone shall become the universal remote control that control our lives. Remotely able to perform a basic phone functions like accept and deny calls, watching movie/video to listening to music, making schedule and surfing internet, to reading blogs and even programming your household items like television, microwave to even air conditioner. And all you need is a single handheld equipment. The iPhone. Just imagine the possibility.

Oh well, let’s just sit back, relax and watch the gruesome fight between these big boys. Sooner or later, there’ll be a lot of alliance and joint ventures between the software giants, with hardware giants or even more acquisition. And in the end, it will become like a giant multi billionaire corporation like in the movie, Resident Evil’s Umbrella.

What’s FON up against?

By Joanie Wexler

The FON community is a grass-roots effort whereby residential Wi-Fi users share access across their wireless networks to their broadband Internet access connections. If the idea takes off, it could usurp (or create sources of interference in) muni/metro Wi-Fi networks being subsidized by city and county governments.

The muni Wi-Fi people are very touchy when people question their business models and whether Wi-Fi, initially intended as an indoor LAN technology, will continue to scale well across wide geographies. “Just come look at all the installations that are out there already working,” they challenge in a defensive tone of voice.

Indeed, there are something like 250 to 300 community Wi-Fi networks in operation today, though only a handful are largely populated cities. And the operations of most of these networks aren’t being challenged by a second, or third, or fourth provider entering the market (can you spell “competition?”). Additional providers could potentially cause interference in Wi-Fi’s unlicensed spectrum, which offers equal access to all potential users of Wi-Fi’s 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum. It would be up to the providers to work these issues out among themselves.

Perhaps most interesting is whether it’s actually legal for individuals to simply choose to share their Internet access connections with anyone off the street. ISPs liken the move to “stealing” video programs over cable, which we all know is the ultimate telecom sin.

Then again, you might have any number of people within your home wirelessly sharing your Internet access connection at any given time, whom you may or may not be related to. Your ISP doesn’t know who and how many of these wireless-device toting folks are in your house (and presumably doesn’t care, so long as it can limit your overall access rate to what you’ve contracted for). Is there a difference if the party doing the sharing is inside our outside your walls?

Time – and likely a court case or two – will tell.

Just tell them that sharing is caring. But so far, do you think Malaysian will share their wi=fi network?
